GM India ties up with Reva Electric

GM India will be into an agreement for development of electric cars for the Indian market. Reva has been making cars for quite some time now and showcased their Reva NXG in the Frankfurt motor show. The NXG is designed by DC Design. Also Reva launched the NXR and NXT. NXR has lead acid batteries and NXT has lithium ion batteries, available in purchase and lease options. Complete news here on the autochannel.

GM has big plans for India, in the small car market and we also saw Ford unveiling the Figo a few days back. We have to wait and watch what the other players are upto. Since we heard rumors of Mazda, Mitsubishi thinking of entering the small car market. Also Suzuki would be entering the car market with the Kizashi, or perhaps a stripped down version of the Kizashi, a sporty sedan.

Pontiac killed

GM has finally pulled the plug on Pontiac and we shall see no more of any Pontiacs being rolled out from production. What a bad thing to happen to the ‘American muscle car’. The first Pontiac was launched 83 years ago and more than half a million cars sold. Hopefully GM will still provide parts, warranty and service for the ones out on sale. Pontiac phaseout will take one or two years. But then, there is also a news that the Pontiac G8, yes the car which is a V8, rear drive with 400 HP, might stay alive with the GM sticker and go in to Holden, the Austrailian arm.

GM shall be going ahead with only four brands : Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC and Buick. This would mean shutting down production of Pontiac at the plant in California : ‘New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.’, 20,000 jobs eliminated. US dealership shall be reduced by 42 %. Some other news say that the fed gov will be a majority share holder in GM. In the end GM plans to have only 38000 union workers and 34 factories in the US as compared to 0.4 million workers and more than 150 plants way back in 1970.
