The GPU rat race

AMD has announced the first 40nm graphics processors running in ATI Molility Radeon HD 4860 and ATI Molility Radeon HD 4830. These have suppor for directx 10.1, and are aimed for the laptops, did i not say they are mobile. So what else is new? GDDR5 memory, twice the bandwidth of GDDR3. Lower power consumption thanks to ati powerplay, powerxpress and switchablegraphics. ASUS is supposedly the first to launch them in their laptops. The max resolution they can offer are 2560 x 1600. That would be a sight! But that would be in AC mode only, aww! This is a link to some images.

Rivals Nvidia have launched two new notebooks gpus – geforce gtx 280m and gforce gts 160m and 150m. These have NVIDIA Hybrid power technology, NVIDIA PhysX effects, CUDA computing architecture. The retailers having these in their laptops are Asus, Clevo and MSI.

Lets wait and watch for some comparison tests.

Sony launches Idou : cybershot + walkman + symbian UIQ

Talk about converging things and the mobile market was where it wont happen. The makers made sure that every product had something special, or if some product was having all the features, then well it would not have all those features. Well it seems the latest offering from Sony Ericsson is a step in the direction of convergence. Perhaps they are realising it is better to make one hard seller than make 10 non selling products. They call it “Entertainment Unlimited”.

To sum up the Idou, [reminds me of the Nike "I do" ad campaign.], it has a 12.1 MP camera, xenon flash, cybershotted, the symbian UIQ, 3.5″ touchscreen. And supports 3G : HSPDA 900/2100, has an accelerometer sensor. Memory support is however limited to microSD only, as usual with cell fones. GPRS class 10 supported. Oh and yes Wi Fi b and g are supported along with the old blue[sweet]tooth. Has a built in GPS with geotagging for images taken, but I think the geotagging will happen only if you subscribe for some GPS service. No information about the battery as of now. Hope it is some good Li Polymer. The interface seems fast in response. Some times it seems the touchscreen interface is something like the I phone. But better than the I Phone :)

And the news from Mobile World Congress 2009 is that more of Entertainment Unlimited devices [cybershot + walkman + ...] will be announced by the summer of 2009, and some other dedicated devices also.
