Miniature USB drive

Some casual surfing landed me up on EagleTec’s website which has a miniature flash drive so small you would think it is only the cap of the drive.

And the size is 4gigs. Perfect raw material for a spy, hehe. And here is a list of the specs:

- USB 2.0 High speed data transfer
- Compatiable with USB1.1 & 2.0
- Speed:Read: 15MB/sec ; Write: 6MB/ sec
- Password protection (Optional download by user)
- Support Windows Vista/XP/2000, Mac OSX (10.2 or above)
- Dimension: 19.4 x 15.4 x 6mm
- Weight: Approx. 2.5g
- 10 years Warranty
- Patent design register:USA:US6148354, Taiwan:1288315

a bit costly, but I think its worth it. I wonder whether it supports linux, guess it should. Adding to my wishlists. And waiting till they support USB 3 ;)

USB 3.0 is on the edge.

With the official launch [read industry deployment] of USB 3.0 slated to be in 2010, I guess its very nascent to talk of it now. So we will be very brief.

The speed rise is expected to be 10 fold, from 480 MBps in usb 2.0 to 5 GBps in USB 3.0. But as usual, that’s the theoretical wire speed. Any ways I suppose the rise in practical transfers would be 8-10x. The hosts for USB 3.0 are xHci, unlike ohci and ehci of usb 2.0 The good part is that it is backwards compatible as far as cabling and device to port compatability is concerned. Which means USB 2.0 devices will work on USB 3.0 hosts and vice versa, in either case it would run at speed of USB 2.0.

Windows support for USB 3.0 is supposed to be initiated from Windows 7 onwards, and for linux as usual, a kernel upgrade in times to come will hit the nail on the head.

Now here starts my imagination : what devices can we expect on USB 3.0?
High speed portable storage devices [could probably beat eSata which runs at 3.2 GBps] , hi resolution HD vid cameras etc…
