Slackware64 packages added/upgraded –

Added kmplayer-0.11.3b-x86_64-1rp, libpng-1.5.8-x86_64-1rp, libpng-1.5.7-x86_64-2rp, json-glib-0.12.0-x86_64-3rp

Please do not uninstall earlier libpng-1.4.x, neither do a upgradepkg since the earlier version is statically linked to the kde4.8.0 build if you are running the same. It is safer to have both packages in parallel.

Motorola stock ROM vs cyanogen mod 7.2 on a defy

A brief review of the stock rom of motorola defy stock rom and a little comparison with cm7.2 The hardware is a motorola mb525 with the SOC camera module, a sandisk memory card 4GB class 4 rating. ROM version is JEM_3.4.3-36-1.7

The main screen on the stock rom has only three buttons at the bottom, call button on the left, a menu button – iphone mimic in the center, and a contacts button on the right.

The dialer is slick and fast and supports T9 search which is really nice and was really missed in the 1st version of stock ROM.

Some nice stock widgets added are the calendar and date widget

Another widget showing time at 2 locations around the globe is a nice addition, but I would like to ask why they limited it to two?

The connected media player is really nice and has nicely integrated the music player, fm radio, shout-cast radio, sound hound, video player, lyrics download, albumart download & tunewiki.

The ability to save radio stations is missing though which is real bad.

Tunewiki provides the lyrics and that is also a good feature.

There is also a stock alarm and timer app. The addition of the timer app is a revision over the earlier rom. The tasks widget is carried over and is useful as well. And for the media savvy we have the DLNA and media share. The task manager is having the additional auto end feature which is really worthwhile and helps save battery. Another neat feature is the data manager which lets a user meter data and also save some. Cell broadcast can be enabled as well.

Swipe keyboard is built in and the skin is absolutely slick.

There is slight banding which is visible in the messaging app.

What is missed as compared to Cyanogenmod

  • Shutdown / Reboot / Boot Menu / Screenshot on power button click.
  • No stock torch flash.
  • Notification widgets / buttons / switches.
  • Automatic backlight tweaks and filters
  • quiet hours
  • and a few more…

CM7 is evolving day by day and hence using the same is something which helps a lot and with the huge developer base the updates keep coming frequently. Catch up on the cm7 rom at cyanogenmod.com or grab a nightly firmware from defy-cm.net

NCDU a ncurses based disk analyzer added

Slackware package created for ncdu a nice disk analyzer. Pretty fast and efficient, and does the job when you do not want to run into a gui. The particular usage is when some files should be actually consuming less space but they consume more and we get erratic results with df.

The source code can be found here. And the slackware x64 package can be found here.

Here are a few screenshots.
